“I was a child of post WWII refugee boat people. The memories that this work is based on are mine and my late parents”

Please tell me a bit about the idea behind your entry – what inspired you, what materials have you used and why?

The ideas behind this work are early childhood memories and photos of myself as a young child on the slippery dip that was then in Marks Park. The park was my childhood playground. The title of the sculpture, Minden Jo Lesz ( All Shall be Well ) was my mother’s last words.

I wanted to link the images in the old photos with the site of the original slippery dip in Marks Park.

What made you decide to get involved in this year’s Sculpture by the Sea?

Having thought about this project for years, my mother’s death last year , and the birth of my granddaughter two weeks later, made me think and feel deeply about the eternal cycle of life, and I thought  “the time is now” I love to play with illusive thoughts and memories. I love shadows and old family photos. I love that the light of a memory seeps through, flooding the palette of our lives.

How long did it take to create your entry and what was the process/ where did you create it?

The sculpture was created on our family property in Arcadia, NSW. The construction has been a very close collaboration with my husband, who is an engineer and builder.

What was the most challenging thing about creating your entry?

To try to project the feelings and emotions of the memories.

How do you feel about seeing your sculpture in this exhibition and what are you most looking forward to about your involvement?

I am thrilled to see my sculpture installed and it is wonderful hearing peoples responses to it. This is my first time in Sculpture by the Sea, and I am excited about everything.

What would you like people to think/say/feel about your sculpture?

I would love people to pause and think about the fleeting nature of time…and smile as they remember the magical time of childhood on a slippery dip.
